Custom Ankle Foot Orthotics
An Ankle Foot Orthosis (AFO) is a brace used to support, align and improve the function of the ankle and foot. At Foot Faults Podiatry we have experienced Podiatrists who can prescribe, customize and fit Ankle Foot Orthoses to help clients with a variety of conditions affecting their walking.
-
Neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy, stroke, multiple sclerosis, and spinal cord injuries that result in muscle weakness or paralysis.
Musculoskeletal Conditions such as arthritis, fractures, tendonitis, and ligament injuries.
Congenital Conditions such as clubfoot or spina bifida.
-
AFOs are often made from lightweight, durable materials such as plastic or carbon fiber. They can be custom-molded to fit the individual's foot and ankle or be off-the-shelf with adjustable components. The orthosis generally extends from just below the knee down to the foot, encompassing the ankle joint.
-
Solid AFO: Provides maximum support and restricts all ankle and foot motion.
Night Splints: Custom and non custom night splints are primarily to be worn during sleep and serve specific purposes related to maintaining foot and ankle positioning, providing stretch, and preventing contractures.
Hinged AFO: Allows controlled ankle movement while still providing support.
Dynamic AFO: Made with flexible materials to assist with more natural movement.
Articulated AFO: Includes a hinge at the ankle to allow for dorsiflexion and plantarflexion (up and down movement of the foot).
-
Improved Mobility: AFOs can significantly improve walking ability and overall mobility.
Pain Reduction: By providing support and alignment, they can reduce pain in the foot, ankle, and lower leg.
Injury Prevention: They help prevent further injuries by stabilizing the ankle and foot.
Enhanced Quality of Life: By improving mobility and reducing pain, AFOs can enhance the quality of life for individuals with lower limb impairments.
-
AFOs often require customization to ensure proper fit and function. This process involves taking precise measurements, 3D scans and sometimes making molds of the foot and ankle. Regular follow-ups are necessary to adjust the fit as needed.
-
The pricing for an AFO device varies depending on the type and level of customization involved for each individual. Your Podiatrist will discuss recommended options with you after your assessment and costs will be provided to you at this time.
-
Custom ankle foot orthotics usually last up to 12 months but, depending on use or rehabilitation, may last longer, or require replacing more frequently.
Straps and additional padding are replaceable which can extend the life of your ankle foot orthoses.
